There’s more to a mechanical watch than just telling time. It’s an art that symbolizes classical engineering, history and even personal stories making it more valuable. It can also be a perfect heirloom, one that can be passed down to generation if taken care of. Here are some simple tips to properly care for a watch.

Clean Your Watch As Often As Possible

Wipe down the band and the case with a soft cloth to remove any dirt or dust then soak the watch in soap or water. Do these for every couple of months. This will loosen the dirt. If possible make it a habit to wipe them with cloth after wearing them to remove whatever exposed particles. Keep in mind however, that certain watches such as those with leather straps need special care.

Service Regularly

Just like a car, a watch also needs to be serviced. Have your watch checked regularly for at least two or three years. They need to be carefully reopened, re-examined, re-oiled and retested. This will help you detect issues before they turn into a big deal.

Avoid Magnets

Most people might not know but placing your watch on a magnet has a negative effect on the timekeeping of your watch. Getting your watch magnetized can either make your watch run fast or slow affecting its time accuracy. As much as possible, avoid placing them near a magnet or on a magnet.

Know Your Watch’s Water Resistance

Watches also have limits so don’t take them beyond to a depth that is beyond their capacity. Your watch may not be able to handle certain depths and the rapid change in pressure. It’s best to avoid water even a splash if your watch is not water resistant or if it has a leather band as it can weaken the leather strap.

Take Care Of The Crystal

As much as possible, prevent the crystal of your watch from banging against a wall or any other object that can cause scratches. It would be best also to buy a screen protector for the crystals. There are screen protectors available for certain watch models.

Keep Your Watch Box For Storage

Watch box can offer protection for the watch so it’s best to keep it in the box when not worn. Accidents will possibly happen and you wouldn’t want them to fall. Leaving it on its side or on the crystal can cause scratches as well. Do not leave them unprotected.

Avoid Extended Sunlight Exposure

Prevent your watch from prolonged direct exposure to sunlight as it can fade the color on your watch. Through this, you are also protecting its battery life. It might not have so much impact on it’s function but just like other gadgets, too much heat can have an adverse effect on a battery.

Avoid Chemical Contact

Cleaning supplies, oils, cologne, perfume and any other chemicals can have a negative effect on your watch. Perfumes and colognes can damage the leather bands so make sure it’s completely dry before you wear your watch. Or better yet, make your watch the last thing you put on when getting ready. Also, do not use powerful cleaners when cleaning your watch.

Never Open Your Watch By Yourself

Opening your watch can expose them to dirt or other particles or worse can damage it. It’s best not to take the risk of opening them by yourself and instead leave it up to a professional.

Be Knowledgeable Of Your Watch

These steps are for general care. However, certain watches have certain needs and thus have certain tips most likely listed in the watch manual. With this, you’ll get to know more about the capacity of your watch such as being water resistant or scratch resistant. Be sure to read your watch manual.

Like any other jewelries or properties, luxury mechanical watches can be full of memories and value and thus they deserve care and love. Hope these tips help you in taking care of your watch so that you can pass them down to your generations.
